Choosing to Embrace Life: An Inspiring Journey After a Stroke

Introducing Lori: an extraordinary mom, talented author, and a true stroke warrior. We had the privilege of connecting with Lori through our hospital stroke support group, and she has graciously agreed to share her inspiring journey with us. Additionally, she’s partnering with our team to enhance stroke rehabilitation and support services across our Nobis Rehab Partner hospitals.

In January 2003, Lori experienced a life-altering hemorrhagic stroke at just 29 years old, a result of an undetected birth defect. Following emergency brain surgery to halt the bleeding, she spent 17 days in a drug-induced coma, waking up to find herself paralyzed on her left side. Despite these overwhelming challenges, Lori was determined to recover and refused to be defined by an event out of her control.

After two grueling months in the hospital, including intensive rehabilitation following a second eleven-hour brain surgery to remove the malformation, Lori returned home in a wheelchair, just shy of her fifth wedding anniversary with her husband. The following years were fraught with trials, including job losses, a cross-country move from Minnesota to Arizona just six months post-stroke, the onset of epilepsy, and a battle with ovarian cancer that culminated in a full hysterectomy.

Eight years after her stroke, Lori and her husband made the life-changing decision to adopt three siblings, bringing both immense joy and challenges of the complexities of navigating parenting. She remains committed to her rehabilitation, continuing therapy to maintain her function and fully enjoy life.

Lori describes being a stroke warrior as a lifelong journey of physical, emotional, and mental recovery. She believes that the mental aspect of rehabilitation is often the most challenging, and she strives to support others by ensuring that therapy teams recognize this critical component.

Today, Lori is a published author and speaker, deeply passionate about inspiring others through the hope and joy she has discovered amid her struggles. She values opportunities to connect with individuals on similar journeys, understanding that many survivors yearn for support, validation, and encouragement. Lori believes that while life can change in an instant, it is possible to find hope, joy, and a sense of success in this new normal.

Life after such a health issue is totally different. Just a few days ago, I fractured my foot, and during this time, I had to shift to another city and settle into a new society. I had no clue about how I managed everything on my own. Then I get to know about Packers and Movers service from Facebook. And this is the best packing service that I have discovered recently.
